The mission of our school is to provide students with disabilities with an appropriate individualized educational program and the goal of every staff member is to improve the quality of life for our kids and their families. Each classroom is staffed with a certified special education teacher as well as instructional assistants. All of our school age students have severe multiple disabilities. These disabilities include autism, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, communication impairments, rare genetic disorders and syndromes, students who are both deaf and blind, and those who are extremely medically fragile. Many of our students are on medications and some have other medical needs such as suctioning and tube feeding. In addition, many of our students have aggressive and disruptive behaviors and communicate through these behaviors. Our school programs include sensory experiences, swimming, music, vocational training, home living skills and recess. Our students receive related services: speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, music therapy and adapted physical education. Although our successes are measured in small steps, they are monumental achievements and cause for celebration.
Students participate in community based activities which require teachers and instructional assistants to travel on school buses, UTA buses, TRAX or FrontRunner. Those activities may include, shopping, accessing public libraries, museums, recreation centers, etc. Students also participate in specific job site training activities at various businesses in the community. When in the classroom, students work on a variety of individual goals based on individualized plans. Areas include, functional academics, independent living skills, community access, employment, and transportation.
Another portion of South Valley School includes students who participate in the wood shop and greenhouse programs. Ability to supervise student safety and encourage their participation is necessary for their success.
River’s Edge School is a self-contained special education school which serves students with severe behavioral, social, and emotional deficits. Students who reside within the boundaries of Jordan School District come to our school via the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) process. River’s Edge School is the most restrictive special education placement in Jordan School District.
